I guess someone made the calculation that it was better to meet half way (as it were) than send two planes out to YYZ for 7 hours flying and then 7 hours back. And I have no idea how they would have handled the crew there because they wouldnt have 2 spare crews in YYZ to take over.

Quite a sensible decision - providing they told the people on the plane before they took off.
