I often pull the same stunt... spend a bunch of money and tell my hubby how much money I saved. :-)

Seriously, I'm surprised they didn't put the onus on you to show proof that you booked the hotel at the lower price. Unless you had a screenshot or something you could have been hooped. I've heard that happen to one or 2 people on CheapOair.
