I am registered in the Free night after two qualifying stays for new MR members and had a question. If we have two rooms in one hotel, would this count as one stay or two stay? Marriott on Twitter didn't have an answer and the Rewards number is closed. I'd appreciate any experiences others have had.

Never had that come up for me but I highly doubt it as they permit the Rewards member to earn points on both rooms but not count them each as a separate stay. If they did, then why would they have a rule against no back to back consecutive stays.
So, likely that they will tell you no, it is just one stay and that you will need a separate stay at a different hotel and/or time to qualify for the free night.
