I was under the same situation last year. I got a DTW-SEA-asia flight at the MCT. I called Delta and the agent told me that it is legal, and that since my landing gate is right beside the departing gate, it was a 10 second walk over. I argued some more, asked for a supervisor, and she was nice enough to give me the earlier DTW-SEA flight instead. I still remember the day of the flight - The DTW flight (I think many domestic flights) changed arriving terminals, and just as my Asia flight announced boarding, I saw that the DTW-SEA flight just landed. If I kept my original flight, I would have to run, catch the train, run and barely make it to the S-terminal gate to catch my flight. I would not have any time to go to the bathroom, catch a bite, or any buffer for a late arrival.

On a brighter note, many long-haul SEA flights are padded, so you might actually arrive in SEA 30 minutes early. In fact, you can go look on flightaware to get average/historetical departure and landing time for your flight to SEA.
What exactly was your argument, since you booked the flights willingly?
