What is the trick with getting EC seats?

I have a KL coded, DL operated flight in October for my wife (GM) and I (DM). I can't select seats on either DL.com or KL.com. Delta reservations and twitter referred me to KLM. KLM told me it is "not possible." Flight was booked via Delta (006 stock).

Shouldn't I be able to get these seats fairly easily since it is a DL coded flight?
