The laptop is much more secure going through the router, whether wired or wireless; it acts as a firewall whereas before you were directly connecting it to the internet.
As others mentioned, encrypt your wireless traffic using WPA2-AES. But if your computer is close to your router, plugging in is both faster and more secure.
