Unfortunately, for a name change of more than two letters, a new PNR and ticket has to be issued. There is no way it can be changed in the existing reservation (the one with the wrong name) with QR or any other airline. In that sense, it makes sense that they make you pay for a new booking at the currently available fare. However, you could try and ask them whether they could waive the cancellation fee as a gesture of good will. Obviously, you did not 'want' to cancel the flight and only had to to buy another ticket with them for the exact same dates, times and flights. I would write to customer service after your flights (I would wait them in case something goes wrong during the trip which would give you an extra argument) to ask if they would refund that £100 fee.
