This sounds like the EU261 rule - but as that is a European Union rule and yours wasn't a European flight, it wouldn't apply. Am I mistaken about your source? If so, where did you find the details?

Do you have a source for this? There has been speculation before, but never any confirmation that I have seen, and most sources I gave seen suggest it is unlikely as HK rules usually limit routes to two carriers from each country and CX/KA don't want to allow another entrant, and also because India doesn't want CX to expand further on Indian routes
