My father got this when trying to check in the other day -- a "security document" instead of a boarding pass, but in his case it did have a boarding position (he had paid for earlybird). In his case it turned out that he had a senior fare and the agents had to see his ID to issue the BP.

But yours without even a boarding position sounds more like a ticket not properly issued or something. I would definitely call.
