Sounds like very good advice: Not in the center of town so none of the extra 'challenges'. Relatively uncomplicated to get to from the A1 motorway (the one you'd need to take from the Florence area); and close enough to everything that a taxi to the center of town wouldn't cost an arm and a leg!
PS You refer to going from Florence to the 'scenic part' of Tuscany. With respect, apart from a few small pockets of industry, I think you would be hard pressed to find any part of Tuscany that were not scenic.
