They have significantly tightened up the last-minute availability of saver awards but I don't think it's extinct. Anecdotally, I have heard that there were a number of incidents of fraud and impermissible uses of MP miles in the EWRTLV market and perhaps that would explain any variance relative to that city pair, but I can't be sure.
