It is not quite this simple, but I appreciate the point you're making. I am pretty sure that if they decided to copy someone else's meals, even if the same caterer prepared them, there would be a lead time required to source the ingredients in all the correct stations, train the staff that does the prep and loads the galley carts (not all carriers have the same exact carts), notify the FAs on proper plating and presentations, etc. It won't happen overnight. It can of course be done, however.
I understand, but their own caterer, THAT THEY OWN..., is making the food for Singapore Airlines. This means that United is making a conscious decision to deliver absolutely awful food. That is actually a choice.
So sad..
