bigger worry is United will go belly up and I won't be able to use my lifelong gold on other star alliance carriers in future. Right now I have no incentive to us my next two 25k flights on United to top up 1k yet again. That will mean, I'm better off gaining gold on OW or Sky than sticking with another star carrier.

United seems to becoming a liability to star alliance.
