Properly listed (as RF), a real F ticket on standby is before upgrades. Even if its listed correctly, it may not be processed correctly at the gate since they don't see these often (since they would normally just be confirmed), at least that's my experience. Some stations are better at it than others.
On full fare F I've gotten on several earlier flights than scheduled, ahead of the upgrade list. Every time requested.
