Yes I have
I'm doing LGW-TPA first, then TPA-LAS (via MIA) on Tuesday and LAS-LGW a few days later. I specifically booked it like this to get the 2000 miler from MIA as I thought it would get me most TP's.
Have not considered US as I was not aware it was possible to earn TP's through them.
Do not upgrade for cash on AA: you won't get TPs for that. You can get the AA equivalent of AUP via a kiosk check in, but TPs do not accrue for the upgrade. There are multiple threads on this particular tale of woe!
Some threads here state that this is the case if under a BA flight number, so that confused me. But from a most knowledgeable user like yourself I trust it's not worthwhile upgrading them
