This is my approach, with the $30 dollar Eagle Creek tote I mentioned above as the base roller-bag. For short trips, I just let my small laptop bag ride on top. For longer trips I have an old TravelPro Flight Crew 2 tote/small-duffel that I let ride on top. The front compartment of the tote can handle my Surface Pro (thinking about getting a sleeve for added protection) and other electronics/accerrories.
I then use a packable non-woven laptop bag (trade-show give-away) for taking my business needs into meetings... I've been doing this since I started (trying) to use a TravelPro Crew 9 20" as a single-bag solution, which was pretty much a failure since it would tip over 50% of the time if you tried to actually use the front laptop pocket (and this is with a 3.5lb Dell Ultrabook, not some beast of a laptop).
