The whole "guitars are allowed" thing scares me. I asked a AA rep this question and she was clueless. Then she says ask finnair, then finnair says to ask AA since its a reward ticket. I don't like the uneasy feeling of bringing my guitar on an international flight with 3 connections and having to play russian roulette with every flight attendant. I'd rather leave the thing at home for a year in my case.
I'm not sure why guitars get a special pass vs. other musical instruments. A professional bassoon, for example, will cost more than 99.9% of guitars and some of the better cases measure exactly 46 linear inches - it's hard to imagine one of these being forced to be checked.
