Yes definitely ask at check-in. Depending on the agent, some will be more than willing to check and inquire with the room manager. Others may just give you the not available response. YMMV.

On the Hyatt website a Regency Club room is available for 33,000 points. Why can't I book the same room at 25,000 points as a diamond? Suites are also available for cash but not for points, which I am sure is perfectly acceptable based on GP's T&Cs, but extremely annoying. A call by the agent to the hotel did no good.
At a minimum I would expect to be able to book a standard room at 25k points, or am I missing something?
If a standard room is avail for sale, you should give GP customer service a call and have them call the hotel to release the room for point redemption. YMMV of course.
