Generally speaking for upgrades you'll need to have miles in the frequent flyer programme you are upgrading to (so AA miles to upgrade AA flights). There are of course exceptions, but this is the general rule.
Okay so if I want to use my Qatar Qmiles for a BA flight then instead of transferring the myself to BA, I can book a BA economy ticket on qatarairways.com then I can upgrade using my Qmiles?
