I was at a conference where SMI/J spoke. He said that during the bankruptcy, united only did reactive maintenance on the 747 fleet - this caused all the problems. When they merged, UAL moved the fleet to effectively overhaul them and begin preventative maintenance. He said the overhaul is over and the planes are back where they need to be - he said reliability is now much higher.
