I'd wager that there is a causal relationship between "delaying a flight for mechanical issues until said issues have been fixed" and "great safety record". Plus, the 747 really is a very safe plane. Decades of flights with very little hull loss incidents, many of which were due to non-mechanical issues (Tenerife, terrorism, etc) show that this is a very well put-together bird.
