Its a place that grows on you and takes a bit of getting used to and you eventually really really enjoy it there. My first taste of Alaska was FAI. Moved there in the dead of winter in 1996. For the first 2 years I royally hated the place and even cursed it from time to time. Some where into the 3rd year I started to really like it there. By then you've learned the climate, how to function during winter, and those great long summer days that last all night. I ended up moving to Anchorage in 2002 for logistical reasons and other work. My story with FAI almost exactly mirrors yours. It's a great place to live, not such a great place to visit if you don't have connections. I'd move back in a heartbeat if the right opportunity presented itself.
