I agree that SYR would be easier given the nonstop options (not to mention much cheaper), but realistically when I factor in the travel time to the airport, the time it takes to go through security/wait, fly, and then drive an hour to BGM, it really does not save me too much time.

The OP is actually traveling to/from DEN, which is why I think DTW as a connection point works well.
