Was at a Walmart today (Mtn View, CA) checking out and I swiped my CSP w/ chip and it told me to please insert it into the chip reader to continue. I did that and then the transaction went through though it took a good 15 seconds to authenticate (i.e. way more time than a usual transaction). No signing and no pin requested ($28 transaction).
Just thought it was interesting and wanted to share as this has never happened to me before, especially in the states. I also didn't know the machines were smart enough to decline a swiped card because it knows there is a chip on it.
They have to be, if they weren't, the chip would serve no purpose as people would just keep copying the stripes.
