I was wondering if I would be able to change my flight on the day of the journey and avoid the change fee? Would it be better to try with LH or UA? It would be great to know if anyone has done something like this.

If your ticket was booked through Lufthansa, it's extremely unlikely (barring IRROPS) that United will even touch the ticket for any changes.
United does have a Same-Day Change policy that, assuming appropriate space was available, would allow you to do what you want for only a $75 fee, but the ticket needs to be issued through United and all flights need to be United metal. (More on that here:

Unfortunately, since your ticket was booked through Lufthansa and contains a Lufthansa segment, you'd need to work with Lufthansa to make any changes, and I am not sure if they have any similar Same-Day Change policy (I'm guessing not--UA's policy is unique in the industry and pretty generous).
That said, for any tips on getting around a LH change fee, the folks in the Lufthansa forum would be the ones to know. I'll move this over there so the experts can assist. (Please note this thread began in the
