My personal heresy: I'd throw the suggestion out about taking a cab to the nearest Metrolink station and taking the train to Union Station and then the FlyAway bus to LAX. It'd be a bit over two hours for that trip, but avoiding potential issues with a connection could be worth it. Although in this particular case, with as far as you are away from LAX, I'd probably personally take the connection in IAH.
