Assuming the battery was covered under the original warranty, it IS covered under the extended warranty. It is kind of a dysfunction that works in your favor - most batteries will not be performing to warranty specs by the end of year 2, even if they were by the end of year 1.
I decided the whole thing was not worth the hassle, and bought an external battery pack case, will keep the phone as-is until the iphone 6 comes out, then trade it in
