Update-- I just changed it to the best flexible rate. I forgot to write down the previous confirmation number (odd that I never got an email confirming my reservation), so I don't know if the new reservation with flexible rate has the same confirmation number or not. We'll see what happens now.
I've managed to change an advance purchase to a best flex in the past. When I cancelled I wasn't charged anything. If they had gone to take the money then you wouldn't have been able to change the rate type. I cancelled straight after changing it to a best flex.
