Delayed AA flight booked via BA?

Apologies if this has been asked a 1000 times before, but I've ploughed through loads of information without being able to get a definitive answer.

We booked a return flight with BA to Honolulu. The first part of the outbound trip was with BA to Los Angeles, the flight to Honolulu was with American Airlines, though booked as a single trip with BA and with a BA flight number. One booking reference covered the return flight.

The AA flight to Honolulu was delayed just under 5 hours, giving us a 9 hour layover at LAX instead of 4 hours. The reason given was that the original plane had been found to have a faulty door. They tried to fix it, but gave up in the end and got a replacement plane. Imagine our delight when, having boarded the replacement plane almost 4 hours late, we were sat on it for almost an hour becuase the door on that one wouldn't shut either (It was off the plane and in the aisle at one point being fixed....). eventually we took off, but arrived almost 5 hours late. To add insult to injury, they hadn't had time to put any food on the replacement plane so we had a 6 hour journey with just a cup of tea. Nothing was provided at all during the extra wait at the airport either.

I have e-mailed BA, but assume that none of the EU regulations apply, despite the booking being with BA?

Thanks
