They don't seem to think of Clubcard as a key aspect of encouraging loyalty any more, particularly because most people seem to be defecting to places that don't have loyalty schemes. Probably the only thing that keeps Sainsbury's and Tesco keeping their schemes is fear that they'll lose more customers, but they probably also realise most don't analyse loyalty schemes like we would here and the fact they offer one and get some coupons every quarter is enough.
Clubcard is hugely important to Tesco, and I think they realise that. The data and insight they get into their customers is immense. So much so, Tesco purchased the company that originally ran the scheme so they could have 100% control of it.
