My family is doing a trip to AKL this summer. Three coach awards to AKL...

IAD-LAX-SYD-AKL-BNE-LAX-IAD.

225,000 miles for the three.

I'm paying for my ticket. I am flying IAD-LAX-IAD on one ticket and then LAX-SYD-AKL-BNE-LAX on a separate ticket.

Breaking it up reduced the total fare from $2650 to $1900 - owing to competition for passengers at LAX.

The downside to flying on QF is a significant penalty for excursion fares. I'm earning only 25% because its a Q fare. So that sucks big time.

Two things you can consider through Advantage - fly on AA to HNL to earn AA miles and then take Hawaiian from HNL to AKL (nonstop). Or, try LAX-NAN-AKL via Fiji Airways. You earn 75% in discount coach on LAX-NAN-AKL.

I can't vouch for their service - its an A330 (same as what you will get on HA).
