The answer to OP's question is that this happens fairly frequently and there really isn't anything to be done. Could be legitimately overbooked or could be that the location manager took a hefty tip from somebody else. You will never know and shouldn't torture yourself.

If you want, send in a complaint and they may toss you something towards your next rental.
