Depending on how much you're saving, is it worth the hassle to worry about all that? Reserve an intermediate, skip the possibility of getting stuck (or worse) at the counter, and be on your way.
I'm all for saving money, but I try to err on the side of "that's good enough" if the tried and true method is only a few extra clams.
