The thing that is really troubling about these bogus BRG's is they cause actual harm, since customers refrain from booking a better third-party rate because they want the benefit of the BRG instead. Then, by the time Hilton/Hyatt/etc. denies the BRG claim, the better rate is gone.
I agree this and other BRGs are essentially worthless and borderline fraudulent, but the best revenge is directing your hotel dollars elsewhere, not spending hours on fruitless emails and phone calls in pursuit of a $17 (or whatever) refund.
The amazing thing is how much energy Hilton and other chains invest in denying BRG claims, oblivious to the costly ill will they are generating over the long term. For God's sake, send the guy his $17 and protect the $10,000 in next-year revenue he represents.
