When I was checking my bag, it looked like several employees were undergoing training. I bet the AS agent that the OP interacted with was an AS employee on temporary assignment in BOS to train the KS agents.
Apparently the trainer on temporary assignment assisted my husband along with one of the new agents. The two (the trainer and the other agent) were also at the gate when the BOS-PDX flight boarded, so my husband was able to thank them again for their help with his carry-on.
