One additional thing to consider is that the direct, bilateral relationships can alter the earning landscape in interesting ways. Airlines which are members of separate alliances might have reciprocal earning within their direct pairing based on specific routes or access to markets. One can still earn US points for flights on some *A carriers, for example. Or the NZ/CX partnership. KL/CM have one as well, IIRC.
