I have been gold consistently with Starwood for about 20 years, while at times I've been gold with Hilton and Marriott. When I've had gold status with Marriott, I have cherished it. Lately gold with Hilton has been so diluted it feels more like silver with a little kick.
That "little kick" must be breakfast which is the HH Gold benefit that causes it to challenge SPG Platinum in the US where suite upgrades (for SPG Plats), excluding SNAs, are a vanishing (if not almost extinct) breed placing the two in direct competition.
