I use a pair of new balance minimus MO90 myself (though I find myself wearing them even when I'm not travelling and their brown suede tops make them an acceptable casual choice). New balance makes some even lighter ones (e.g. the minimus hirez). If you do move to lower drop running shoes it probably is a good idea to phase them in a bit.
I have the same pair, they are my casual travel shoes. They should be great gym shoes. I don't like running with them however, too hot for me.
My Five finger shoes are great for running; but as an older runner, I don't take it beyond a flat, 3 miles.
