The situation:
I book non-refundable flight and receive confirmation. About 1-1.5 weeks before the flight I cancel my reservation over the phone and receive an electronic travel certificate pin number for the $900 cost of the flight that is good for 1 year (subject to a change fee for booking a new flight). I have since lost the pin number united gave me.
How did you get an e-cert for this kind of cancelation. This is not SOP - typically, when you cancel a non-refundable reservation, the value remains in the same PNR, but the segments within it get canceled. Then you have to re-book whatever segments you want under that PNR (on the website - under the inactive tab in my reservations) - you pay the change fee at that time. The only time you would get an e-cert if the new ticket you book is less than the (in your case, $900 value), which would get the ecert in a balance.
Am I missing something, here?
