Ray,

as a D3 you're flying non-rev space available. Basically you are the bottom of the list. Your friend should be able to check the flight loads for you on jetnet and will need to list you for the flights you plan on taking, and select class of service. There's a dress code involved for passes- you will need to be in business casual to sit in first. The passes aren't free either, though a fraction of a regular fare - F or J cost more, and the fees are taken directly out of your friend's paycheck. You're going to want to list for the first flight of the day - if you don't make it on, you are rolled onto the next flt list. Good luck... in particular on a Sunday LAX-ORD... get up early and cross your fingers. It's a crap shoot. Sometimes it works wonderfully, but be aware it can literally take days to get out if the planes are full.
