Air China PVG lounge access for UA *G

I'll post this in the UA forum, as my status is from UA. (Mods feel free to move as appropriate)

I was transiting PVG from PUS-PVG-TPE last week, and went to visit the new Air China Lounge in PVG. The lounge is divided into a 1st class and business class sections. At the door, (wish I had taken a photo), both lounges had the *G logo beside them.

My flight was Y - on Asiana PUS-PVG, and C on PVG-TPE on EVA.

I was denied access at first to both lounges when showing my UA 1k card (with the *G logo clearly in the corner), as well as both boarding passes - Air China claimed that I needed an invitation and had to get one from the EVA counter. When I said that the *G logo on the door and the matching one on my card should grant me access, there was pushback. Eventually they said I could go in to the business side and that they would "make an exception" I asked about the first class side (again clearly a *G logo on the sign) and they said no because i was only flying in C class to TPE.

Didn't want to push it too far, but I thought I read that if the logo was there on the sign, you should be entitled to access.

Anyone had the same trouble, or been denied, or know the real rules???
