I agree with you and my research so far indicates that airlines are supposed to enforce these rules or can face stiff penalties. I meant to actually post about potential for problems on my return trip to India in the India forums

Passports and travel documents are required to be valid during the duration of the visit. You do not need a minimum of validity in your passport or travel document to travel to Spain.
2) On the return trip, would the airline have to check the rules for the destination country India? I can't find anything relevant from the Indian consulate links. I actually have the PIO if there are any Indians reading this
