Even if you pay for everything by card (which is only any good if your card doesn't have a foreign transaction fee) you still need to get your head round the exchange rate. I do agree that it isn't an insurmountable problem - and certainly preferable to the 11 minute connection (which seems to be a recurring issue with bahn.de, it's offered me a few implausiable connections before now).
