If it's anything like the Nuremberg one I don't blame you, I really want to go back. Incidentally the Zagreb-Munich train did have a late-night passport inspection last year but that was prior to Croatia joining the EU so things may have changed.
Deployments wise... I believe there are US troops in Poland and/or Estonia as part of the Russia deterring effort. Which is admittedly a rather different matter to Iraq, Afghanistan etc - have a safe deployment whichever delights await you.
