This just happened to me today, but with JAL award tickets. I used the BA site to check and saw 3 J tickets available on JAL (SGN-SFO). I called AA's reservation to book for two passengers, but the agent told me that he only saw one available. I asked him to check again while I used the BA site to check again. Two tickets were gone. Somebody got them before I did.
