LCC here make a big earning from gate checking oversize bags at a hefty fee.
I took 4 BA flights 2 months ago, and everyone's bag except a select few were tagged. I went through their premium lanes (as EXP) and never had anyone mention anything, so my two very large (both were full 22" rollaboard sized) carry-ons were no problem to both go in overhead bin.
Being EXP does have its perks.
