This is certainly nothing new. There is a thread from 2011 or so, talking about the problems with shills and fake reviews (both positive and negative) on TripAdvisor.
May not be new but it's a very valuable post. Countless people rely on it without due caution. For Italy it is generally worthless except for those who double and triple check using other resources. Especially when it comes to Italian food and hotels.
