Yes, it is possible for FO's to get upgraded at the window. I'm batting 1-for-4 on upgrades this year (SJC-LAX on a CR9 on a Friday afternoon), and that was an upgrade at the window.

Last year I did very well, with many upgrades occurring at the window:
GSO-ATL-SLC (July 4th) and ATL-GSO
CLT-LGA-CMH and CMH-LGA-CLT
CLT-ATL and ATL-CLT (multiple)


Not holding my breath that my batting average will improve. F on the 753 redeye SEA-ATL on Friday, July 4th, is more than half-full already.
