I have two $25 discount certificates that I want to use on AS, but each one is only good for 1 traveler, so I need to book the tickets separately. I get 2 free bags as AA gold but the website says passengers must be traveling in the same reservation. We'll have 4 bags, so if I cannot extend my free bags to my companion it will wipe out the discount.
Linking reservations has absolutely no benefit except possibly alerting an AS agent attempting to rebook you during IRROPS that you are traveling together and so to try to keep you on the same flight. Linking reservations confers no additional benefits, including extending benefits like baggage fee waivers, upgrade benefits, or anything else.
For your companion to take advantage of the baggage fee waiver, you'll need to book them in the same reservation as you.
