Wanted to see if anyone has any updated experiences with linking PNRs and baggage fee exceptions?

I have two $25 discount certificates that I want to use on AS, but each one is only good for 1 traveler, so I need to book the tickets separately. I get 2 free bags as AA gold but the website says passengers must be traveling in the same reservation for it to extend to companions. We'll have 4 bags, so if I cannot extend my free bags to my companion it will wipe out the discount.
